My mother has given me the best parenting advice by example: She was a stay-at-home mom when my sister and I were small, then went back to school to complete her nursing degree, then worked her way up from nurse to executive level management for one of the largest insurance companies in the nation. All the while, she never missed a school performance, never missed a parent-teacher conference. She was always the mom that would volunteer to be the room mother, the girl scout leader. She made holidays and birthday parties special, sewed the most original Halloween costumes ever and took our family on some amazing travels. She always made sure that my sister and I had everything and more, and best of all, she stressed education, pushing my sister and I to pursue fields that interested us. Now, she's a wonderful grandma to boot, and she continues to enjoy much professional success.

My mom has taught me that yes, you can have it all, but it will take all the energy and love you've got, and a little bit more.

Some of my mom's other wise gems, off the top of my head:

-Remember to put on your lips (lipstick)

-Watch out for LIARs and LAZY people.

-Take care of your clothes - they last longer.

-That's why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

-Take care of yourself - health-wise and finance-wise. Because if you don't, nobody else will.
