Review and Giveaway! A Brown Bear, A Moon, and A Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle

Do you have The Very Hungry Caterpillar memorized? After having read this sweet little book 300+ times in my lifetime, to both my son and my daughter, I have this and so many other Eric Carle books memorized by heart. The hungry, fuzzy green caterpillar has been a part of many bedtime routines. So you can imagine how thrilled Chiara was when the curtain opened yesterday for A Brown Bear, A Moon, and A Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater to a very familiar moon, and then a very familiar egg, lying on a leaf. Chiara sat - literally - at the edge of her seat. When the very hungry caterpillar popped out - she cheered and the entire crowd roared.

The Chicago Children's Theatre is always a treat for our family - how they manage to keep an audience of 2-5 year-olds engaged and mesmerized is beyond me. But the colorful puppetry, the calm, classic music and visual effects had my daughter and the entire audience captivated by their favorite characters as the acclaimed Mermaid Theater of Nova Scotia weaved the tales of three Eric Carle favorites: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, and Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me. The set design, puppets, and tone and pace of the show kept within the familiar Carle aesthetic, and bringing the stories alive before the eyes of the packed audience.

The star of the show, was, by far, the very hungry caterpillar. His bumbling legless gait and endless appetite as he ate through a lion's share of food enthralled the children. I had just as much fun watching my daughter and the other happy children enjoying the gift of live theater as I did the show.  My 2-year-old daughter was simply thrilled to see her favorite characters come to life through the magic of theater.
